A gargantuan Puerto Rican parrot has landed on the Distrito T-Mo-
bile tower to celebrate the beginning of the recovery of her species
after Hurricane Maria. In 2017, the storm depleted 60% of the popu-
lation, and in 2020 there was a breeding boom wherein 44 chicks
were released into the wild. The Amazona vittata is the rarest of the
Amazona parrots and is classified as an endangered species.

Together they merge  design, art and architecture to produce innovative and creative  multicolored mosaics in public and private spaces. Tito Puente is a  fitting tribute for the musical trailblazer, timbalero, and band leader  who familiarized the general public with Afro-Caribbean rhythms.

Tito Puente

Carlos is a self-taught artist whose work pivots around  icons,  mirrors, gilding and flat, saturated colors. He has utilized a  photograph by Jack  Delano  to turn  the  sugar  cane  into  gold  and the worker’s clothes into brilliant colors. Mete caña, Carlos’s  largest work to date, pays tribute to the end of an era when Puerto  Rico was a production leader in the world of sugar, which lasted  from the 19th to the 20th Century. The title is a Boricua expression  which means “work hard” and is used to support and encourage  someone.

Jorge “Rito” Cordero is a sculptor and performer who produces artwork from a variety of ready made objects, such as bicycles, and  recycled materials. His themes center around Taíno imagery, Puerto  Rican folklore and popular culture. Ancestro is an assemblage of  upcycled scratched skateboards which resemble a stone carved representation of a skull.

Axel Ruiz produces traditional oil paintings and interactive sculptures with pixelated and pastiched images inspired by contemporary visual culture and scientific theories. 

Astrophysical Conundrum, his largest work to date, is a sculptural mural representing the beauty of chaos and the idea that everything has a cause and an effect although it mat not be apparent to our limited comprehension, nothing is random, no matter how messy it seems to be.

Astrophysical Conundrum

Also known as “Bik” or “Ismo”, Joshua Santos is a painter and  muralist whose work  has  been  internationally  recognized  and  is identified by his toaster signature. His hyperrealistic, chromed  graffiti  mirror   the    surroundings    where    they    are    painted.  This wall was especially selected by the artist to create the illusion  that the enormous goldfish is dreamily swimming into the plaza.

Mete Caña

Camila Buxeda is an artist who produces paintings and images in
watercolor and ink. Her work focuses on femininity and the contem-
porary Puerto Rican experience. Hecho en Puerto Rico is a series of
still life watercolors describing a variety of Puerto Rican consumer
products, typical snacks, as well as tropical fruits, plants, and ani-
mals.

HECHO EN PUERTO RICO

Jorge is a multi-faceted and well recognized artist, best known for
his surrealistic paintings and sculptures. One day, as he walked to
his studio in Old San Juan, the artist was feeling the collective
burden of his community, so he decided to draw the message Todo
Bien (All Good) with his signature on an adoquin, or paving stone, of
the historic city. In a short time, the community reacted with such
positivity that he decided to move the message to a canvas and
that’s how a series of oil paintings started. This is the first Todo Bien
that Zeno returns to the adoquines by painting on a photograph he
took.

TODO BIEN

Alexis Bousquet is a well-known artist, muralist, curator and art
community leader. He is the founder of the Instituto de Subcultura
and creator of the Santurce es Ley art festival. Through these vin-
tage televisions, the artist revivifies the Mexican entertainers that
persist in the memories of a pre-internet childhood.

La tele

This collective of young female artists believes in “artivism” and community-led muralism to articulate narratives that reflect the stories and context of a place. La Merced is inspired by Mexico City’s largest and most iconic market. While focusing on and paying homage to the laborious women who prepare tortillas with great care, the mural exalts the hard work and soul that goes into the food we love.

La Merced

Tomas Dambo is a Danish artist known for creating sculptures out of recycled materials with his team. They travel the world assembling and installing these enormous figures in natural spaces. A thoughtful child, made of the scrap wood from the Distrito T-Mobile build, plugs in a string of light bulbs that illuminate a sign with blue lettering. Bright Future reminds us that listening to our inner voice can transform our belief of what lies ahead.

Bright Future

Ana María Ortiz is an artist and animal scientist who fuses human
and animal forms to create remarkable and unusual beings.
She is known for her delicate brushwork, skilled drawing,
and sense of humor. The San Pedrito -or Puerto Rican Tody-
captured mid-flight, is a striking and colorful expression of diversity
represented in an endemic bird.

San Pedrito

Local band Calle 13's guitarist is also known as KidneticK for his large-scale, moving sculptures made of upcycled materials. For Sazón Cocina Criolla, Mark built a 14' red snapper to reference a favorite local dish: chillo al ajillo. His construction, made of wood, steel, and upcycled sails, is inspired by the fuselages of aircraft. Powered by the parts of his grandfather's sewing machine (look for a Singer pedal behind the head), the rustic contraption will sometimes come to life to join the party.

Chillo al mecánico

Celso González and Roberto Biaggi, both multitalented architects and artists, compose Cero Design & Built. Héctor Lavoe is an homage to an iconic 1970s Salsa celebrity whose solo performaces with the Fania All-Stars established his reputation and led him to stardom.

Sofía Maldonado is an artist and designer who works on a variety of surfaces and at different scales. She has focused on painting colorful and energetic abstract murals which have shifter towards digital media in 2020. Yagrumo, Sofías first digital mural inspired by Lewis Carroll's, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, is an enchanting forest of electric, vibrating color which begs to be explored.

Yagrumo

This series of neon signs was created as a tribute to Master don Angel Rafael "Lito" Peña's iconic musical composition. "Ay que rica es" is a bomba which was recorded by the Orquesta Panamericana and Ruth Fernandez in 1962. It has, since then. been immortalized as a Puerto Rican folkloric standard which is symbolic of festivities.

Alas de Cotorra

evaristo Angurria is an illustrator and art director who creates graphic, humorous, and colorful murals which often include typography. He collaborated with his friend Johann Báez, known as Dovente, to create Mayahuel for the Distrito T-Mobile. 

This impressive mural represents the goddess of the maguey plant, known as agave, from which the sacred, fermented, and alcoholic pulque was made. The phrase to the left of the mural was written by Mexican poet Jaime Sabine and it means "if you survive, if you persist, sing, dream."
